Relationship between Chemical Engineering and Industrial Engineering

here i try to explain something in dual languages, indonesian and english..

first i want to introduce you what is chemical engineering and why i write about this topic.

in my opinion in simple description, Chemical Engineering is one of field of study that process raw material to be more valuable product with the chemical process equipment and chemical reaction

but the process is not that simple…

Chemical Engineers must know detail of material, process, reaction, and what kind of end product that they need, how to handle material, what kind of specific equipment for processing those materials, calculate how many raw material they need and how much the product from that reaction, how much money they have to spend, how big the land to build a plant, where the plant will get the material, and whom will buy the end product and what it is for, when they get Break Event Point, and safety of the process and product..(maybe i missed something, but those all some points about chemical engineering)

i took Chemical Engineering for my undergraduate degree …thanks God i took that major, it’s really useful in my life…and i think many industries need Chemical Engineers..

Second, i will introduce you about Industrial Engineering and Management

i took this course for my graduate degree, my father suggest me to take this course if i want to learn about how to manage chemical plant or company.

actually the courses are not too complicated as Chemical engineering, but still i need time to adapt with Industrial Engineering courses.

when i learned about PPIC, Operation management, Operation research, i just remember when i was worked in Ceramic industry..remember the process in different view point, ( chemical engineers think about how the ceramic process and what cause the ceramic defect how to reduce it by chemical process, but industrial engineers think about when the plant will order new material (schedule), how much it is (warehousing), where they have to supply their raw material and product with low cost but high benefit ( supply chain mangement and engineering economy)), how many product defect and how much company loss ( statistic and TQM), how to create safe and comfortable working environment (Ergonomic and Safety).. other department will create company database and integrated information system to make the company management easily to manage and check out their company efficiently (MIS, Knowledge Management), and how to create new plant (Project management)..

actually industrial engineering and management courses more uncomplicated than chemical engineering because Chemical engineering courses for graduate degree are advance of chemical engineering from undergraduate, such as advance thermodynamic, advance kinetic reaction, advance transfer phenomenon, and other advance chemical engineering courses which have difficult mathematic solution and formula…

even i like chemical process but i don’t like to get involved with those complicated mathematic formula…:P..those why i took Industrial Management for my graduate degree..

Maybe my english language is not good and still need some revision, but i hope you can understand what i have already explain above. those are just my personal opinion and view point about relation ship between Chemical Engineering and Industrial engineering if you have any suggestions or critics just send me email or comment in my blog..

nb: to be continue with other story about Chemical Engineering and Industrial Engineering
